Aims and Objectives

Peter Brigg

The aims and objectives of the Friends of Shoreham Fort are to conserve, maintain and restore Shoreham Fort, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, back to her former 1857 glory.

Being the last fort of its kind it is vital that this nationally important heritage site is preserved for years to come to enable the continued education of our local history and significance in protecting the English shores from invasion.

The Friends of Shoreham Fort will work towards a full restoration, including the reinstatement of the Barrack Block, for use as a multi purpose community facility.

We will continue to promote the historical importance of the site through guided tours, presentations and living history displays, thus enhancing the site and literally bringing history to life.

Working with others we wish to exhibit local history of the surrounding area, such as Buckingham Camp, making Shoreham Fort a hub for military history.

For the commemorative years of WWI, the Friends of Shoreham Fort have secured funding through Adur’s Pot of Gold which will go towards creating a WWI memorial training trench that has been planned to be accessible to all, regardless of age or ability.

Education is a priority to the Friends of Shoreham Fort and we are very grateful to have had a WWII Nissen Hut donated.  We have not only been able to re-instate history onto the original WWII Nissen Hut bases at the fort, but we have also been able to rescue heritage from Chidham and stop it being demolished and lost.

Until now there has been no way of sheltering visiting schools, community groups and general public in bad weather and trips have in fact been cancelled. The Nissen Hut has already proved to be an invaluable asset to the site, not only for its historic significance but by providing the dedicated volunteers shelter on bad days.  The hut has garnered great interest and support from local groups and individuals such as Friends of Shoreham Beach, Steve Savage – Marine Biologist, National Coastwatch Shoreham, the Maritime Volunteer Service, Creative Waves, Visit Worthing and Worthing Council.

If you would like to hear more about the future management of the site then please do not hesitate to contact us.

We're always in need of equipment, tools, and items at the fort... here's a few things on our wish list:

Renewal of IT/presentation equipment

With a partial award for an application to Sussex Community Foundation we have been able to increase our outreach and education programme; therefore increasing word of mouth of our project and engaging the wider community in a positive and proactive manner.

A big THANK-YOU to Sussex Community Foundation for the donation!

Newly equiped classroom facility

This year we were able to purchase 40 chairs, 40 clipboards, an A Frame easel and dry marker pens to complete our classroom facility in the Nissen hut. This was all made possible by the Shoreham and Southwick Rotary who we help when we can with book donations and especially at Christmas with our very own version of Elf and Safety lol Thank you for your continued support

A big THANK-YOU to Rotary Club of Shoreham & Southwick for the donation!

Purchased with funding raised through a week of community fundraising in Shoreham Branch

A big THANK-YOU to Santander for the donation!

Door and window for Food for Fort

We were very fortunate to have been donated the doors to the Nissen hut and Food of Fort by Vivo Vision in Worthing. Unfortunately, with the break in, the door and window to Food for Fort is damaged and has been boarded up since September. It would be incredible if there was anyone out there who could help us with the replacement of these broken items.

We have four main events of the year, the biggest being our Military History Weekend - Sponsors of any of our events would be very welcome - please contact us

Hand tools

We are getting to the end of the useful life of our trowels, hand garden forks and equipment that we use for carefully weeding around the Scheduled Monument. Any small hand tools would be gratefully received. As would kneeling mats and gloves.

Barrack Block

The Dream........ We really are working on this but relying on others is a very frustrating process ;)

People are genuinely surprised when we tell them how few volunteers we have that come on site on a regular basis to help maintain and conserve the site for the enjoyment of the public. If you think you would like to get involved with this amazing project then please do get in touch or come down on one of our volunteer days. It may look like it's all hard, manual work but there really is a job for all.
