Tin Hut Talk - Gary Baines
Thursday 21st May, 06:30 pm — Shoreham Fort
Our third guest speaker for our 2026 'Tin Hut Talks' series, in the last useable WWI Nissen Hut in the country.
This month's Tin Hut Talk guest speaker is Gary Baines, Chairman and founder of the Friends of Shoreham Fort, has been monitoring both Shoreham and Littlehampton Forts and researching their history for over 30 years now.
Discover the unique and diverse heritage of Shoreham Fort, a scheduled monument (think Stonehenge without the funding), which incorporates the Charge of The Light Brigade, a French spy and a famous British Actor. It includes the progression from the Shoreham and Littlehampton prototype forts to the Palmerston Forts around the country, highlighting the corrected design flaws at Littlehampton along the way.
From inception to our vision for the future, this talk leaves nothing to the imagination. With photos, maps, drawings, videos and Gary’s extensive knowledge, our aim of ‘Giving History a Future, by Bringing History to Life’ is certainly achieved.
After the talk there will be a comfort break before Gary then takes you on a short tour of the site.
Shoreham Fort is more than an historic ruin, it’s a story waiting to be told so come and find out for yourself.
Do come and join us to learn the facts about Shoreham Fort, where you will find a hot drink waiting for you which included in the price.
Doors will be open from 18:30 for a 19:00 start.

Tin Hut Talk - Trevor Povey
Thursday 18th June, 06:30 pm — Shoreham Fort
Our fourth guest speaker for our 2026 'Tin Hut Talks' series, in the last useable WWI Nissen Hut in the country.
This month's Tin Hut Talk guest speaker is Army Veteran, Engineer, local historian and very long time supporter Trevor Povey who is giving a fully illustrated account of the build-up, training and logistical preparation in our local area in before and during 1944 - culminating in the embarkation of 3rd Infantry Division units & Royal Engineers who were participating in Operation Neptune, the Naval assault on Sword beach, as part of the D Day fleet.
Shoreham and Kingston are the poor relations regarding this vital role, with more being written about ports like Gosport to Southampton—due, in part, to the accessibility of records.
Join us, as we continue to strive to put Shoreham on the map...

July 2026
Tin Hut Talk - Tony Bray
Thursday 16th July, 06:30 pm — Shoreham Fort
Our fifth guest speaker for our 2026 'Tin Hut Talks' series, in the last useable WWI Nissen Hut in the country.
This month's Tin Hut Talk guest speaker is Tony Bray, who returns to enlighten us again. This time we shall discover how 70 German engineers neutralized the mighty Fort Ében-Émael. Defended by nearly 1,000 Belgian soldiers, in an underground complex 65 meters deep, it took just 30 minutes using two secret weapons. This catastrophic defeat on 10th May 1940 shattered the allied defense line, leading to Dunkirk and the fall of France.
Ex-soldier and glider pilot Tony is a regular Army Flying Museum presenter - he brings this dramatic story alive with rare footage and photos, from his personal visits to the fortress.
Don't miss this captivating exploration of a remarkable military achievement!
Do come and join us in welcoming Tony to Shoreham Fort, where you will find a hot drink waiting for you which included in the price.
